No Chance for Paul: He missed the last chance to hide. It is one thing to build a nest with Ines or to have a civil marriage in Denmark. But now he stands in the bright light of the bride, all of us observing them. - "A city built on a mountain cannot be hidden."
There is a sacrament of the church to be celebrated. And that is always a public thing. Marriage is a Sacrament, something we have in mind (ment-al), that turns out to be hold sacred (sacra). What is to be seen is God himself in the love and trust, Ines and Paul give each other.
  • We have to thank them for what they are doing today. Not only because they brought together a unique and wonderful mixture of there families and friends, and offered us to have a party with them. The best thing they donate to us is that 'Sacred Thing'. With that they will be "the Salt of the Earth."

2. Geschenk an uns

It was the two who have selected the two readings we have heard. I do not think it is a coincidence that the First Reading is taken from the letter Paul the Apostle has written to introduce himself to the Christians in Rom, where our Paul first met Ines. The Chapter read to us is about how Christians should live together.
What we heard is not a moral advice but a vision what life can be if we live it in close relationship to God following Christ. It is the vision of a good life.
The single advices in the reading are pretty random. But we can see Saint Paul's point, when we look up the beginning of that chapter. There we read: "Give yourselves as a living and holy sacrifice pleasing to God". That is the secret how to find good life! When we find the point, where we can give our life in other hands, we are on the path to good life.
  • The civil marriage in Denmark was a civil contract for mutual benefit. That is a fine thing. But when the mutual benefit is over, you can return to the office and have a civil divorce. No "living and holy sacrifice" but a maybe-limited contract. It is madness to give "oneselves as a living and holy sacrifice" except there is a God to whom I can hand over myself because he will transform me to the fulness of live.

3. Uns als Geschenk empfangen

  • How to do that handing myself over to God? Who could tell me the shipping address of the Divinity? Here we are with today's marriage: "I take you as my wife / my husband. I promise to be faithful to you for richer or for poorer in sickness and in health, Until death us do part. I will love you, cherish you and honour you all the days of my life." God himself became a Human and so we do not serve an abstract principle but in palpable Persons. Saint Paul describes how to serve each other in the Church. For Christians every Family bound together in the Sacrament of marriage is a Church Entity.
  • All this should encourage you to say the big Yes to each other. Offer you Spirit, your Soul and your Body to your partner and let him or her transform you to someone new.
  • Ines, you are baptized and God will entrust Paul into your care. "Pray constantly" so you will be guided.
  • Paul, we believe that there is a God who trusts in you. You are gifted with charm and geniality. I am sure that God gave these to you to serve. Keep your openness toward what you will experience and you will find out, that you can celebrate your marriage as a daily sacrifice to one another. Just remember Saint Paul's word: "Outdo and exceed one another in mutual respect!"
Thank you, Paul and Ines for the testimony of trust you give us today. It is that what Jesus meant: "A city built on a mountain cannot be hidden." Amen.
